The design students had the opportunity to participate in another design trip in a bustling design city of the Los Angeles, California!! One of the design capitals of the US! What an AMAZING experience!! Design students who participated in this trip found this opportunity extremely beneficial to the application of their post-secondary education and their future careers. Students got the opportunity to visit fashion showrooms and view upcoming fall lines (tons of behind the scenes clothing that isn’t out in stores yet!!). We visited Silver jean’s and Hudson jean’s showrooms and learned about everyhtingfrom the design process of jeans, to the production of the jeans, to buying for stores. The students also got to learn about all of the different jobs in the fashion industry!!!

We spent majority of our days down in the “Fashion District” of downtown Los Angeles. There are thousands of show rooms within this fashion neighborhood. Floors upon floors house designer’s showrooms. We were able to walk the halls and see the sample displays and showrooms. It was quite the experience seeing what it is like to be down in the fashion district. Just eating lunch on a patio of a downt town resturant was a learning opportunity to see different trends of people working in the industry.

We spent a day at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). FIDM is it’s own little community. Offering so many career opportunities and networking for it’s current students and Alumni. Many alumni have a 90% rate of obtaining a career in the design field. Companies include: Adidas, Nike, Underarmor, Anthropologie, BeBe, Bloomingdale’s, Zara, Old Navy, and many more!!
Our students were able to participate in a hands on workshop…..they learned to sew and made a skirt they designed in one day! We toured FIDM campus during our lunch break. The thought behind the design was perfect for our interior design students to see. We toured the museum which was currently showcasing current movie’s costumes. No pictures were allowed, but we saw some AMAZING, real-life costumes from movies like Catching Fire and The Great Gatsby. Check out the girl’s finished sewing projects and some of the campus.

The experience of traveling as part of a group enhanced interaction with one another, other adults, and many professionals within the design industry. Los Angeles’ retail stores, businesses, and colleges provided the students with worldwide exposure in the fields of merchandising, visual merchandising, store layout, architecture, history, interior design, and buying principles. Talk about real life learning happening here!
Of course, we got to visit landmarks in the city as well as retail shops. All were quite the experience! AND SO MUCH FUN!!!
